83. Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera, will take place at Venice Lido from 2 to 12 September 2026.

 

The actress and director Greta Scarano with actor Nicolas Maupas will host the opening night and the the closing ceremony when the Lions and other official prizes will be announced.

 

This year the Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement have been awarded to the American actor, director and producer George Clooney (Jay Kelly, Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck) a complete and charismatic artist, impassioned and original, who has transformed a deep vocation into one of the most luminous parabolas of contemporary film, and to the American actress Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Interstellar) actress of rare intensity and truth, who has been a presence in American cinema for over fifty years, bringing depth and complexity to unforgettable female characters embodying the contradictions and transformations in the contemporary woman.

 

INK, directed by the Academy and BAFTA award winning Danny Boyle (28 Years Later Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) and starring Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy, is the opening film, in a world premiere in competition (Wednesday 2 September). The film is an account of publisher Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of the daily newspaper The Sun, which he entrusted to the unscrupulous Larry Lamb, turning it into Britain’s best-selling tabloid.

 

In a tribute to the Venetian filmmaker Tinto Brass, the non-conformist genius of Italian cinema, Deadly Sweet (Col cuore in gola, 1967) will be the featured film on the Pre-opening night, Tuesday 1 September in Sala Darsena on the Lido di Venezia. The film which is included in the Venice Classics programme of the 83rd Venice Film Festival and will have its world premiere screening of the restored digital 4k version, is the story of a strange brief encounter between a disenchanted man and a girl with no illusions. Strange because it takes place in front of a dead body, brief because it lasts no more than one day and one night. Yet this short interval of time is sufficient to reawaken the rusted mechanism of illusions in him, and in her to kill every feeling other than the purely biological instinct for survival.
