From 1 to 11 September 2027, the Venice Lido will once again host the Venice International Film Festival. Eleven days dedicated to great cinema, featuring premieres, encounters and leading figures from the international film industry.

The official dates for the 2027 Venice Film Festival have been announced. The 84th edition of the event, organised by La Biennale di Venezia, will take place from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 11 September 2027, bringing directors, actors, industry professionals and film enthusiasts from around the world back to the Lido.

The announcement was made on 12 September 2026, during the closing ceremony of Venice 83, when the President of La Biennale, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, revealed the dates of the next edition.

The event marks the return of one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, which transforms the Venice Lido into an international hub for cinema, culture and entertainment every September.

Venice 84: What We Know About the 2027 Film Festival

The 84th Venice International Film Festival will be directed by Alberto Barbera, who has been confirmed as Artistic Director of La Biennale’s Cinema Department for the 2027–2028 term.

His reappointment ensures continuity with the approach developed in recent years, during which the festival has strengthened its international standing by showcasing both established filmmakers and emerging talents.

The Venice Film Festival offers a unique perspective on the evolution of cinematic language, with a selection of films spanning different countries, genres and creative visions.

The programme for the upcoming edition is still being finalised. The selected titles, competition films, juries and stars expected on the red carpet will be announced in the coming months through the official channels of La Biennale.

The dates, however, are already confirmed: Venice 84 will open on 1 September and conclude on 11 September 2027, with the presentation of the official awards.

The Venice Lido: A Landmark in Film History

The connection between the Venice Film Festival and the Venice Lido dates back many decades. Founded in 1932, the festival established its historic home on the island, helping to create a distinctive identity that combines Venice’s tradition of hospitality with the world of cinema.

Over the decades, the Lido has welcomed some of the most influential figures in international filmmaking, providing the setting for premieres, encounters and unforgettable moments in film history.

Even today, the island takes on a special atmosphere during the festival. Lungomare Marconi comes alive with journalists, photographers and visitors, while cinemas host screenings and festival events.

The Palazzo del Cinema, inaugurated in 1937, remains the festival’s most iconic venue. It houses the famous Sala Grande, where the most eagerly awaited screenings and main official ceremonies take place.

Alongside the Palazzo del Cinema, the Palazzo del Casinò and other venues traditionally associated with the festival help transform this area into an international centre for film culture.

But the Venice Film Festival extends far beyond its screening venues. The entire Lido becomes part of the event, with historic hotels, restaurants, beaches and public spaces turning into meeting places for guests and visitors.

Venice Film Festival 2027: An Opportunity to Discover the Lido

Attending the Venice Film Festival also offers the opportunity to explore the Venice Lido during one of its liveliest periods of the year.

September is a particularly appealing month to visit the island. The lingering warmth of summer is accompanied by a rich cultural calendar, while the Lido retains its distinctive character, shaped by historic architecture, long sandy beaches and picturesque views of the lagoon.

Between screenings, visitors can stroll along Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta, head towards Lungomare Marconi or discover the village of Malamocco, one of the island’s most charming locations.

It is an experience that combines participation in the festival with the discovery of the local area, its landscapes and traditions.

For visitors travelling from outside Venice, knowing the festival dates in advance also makes it easier to plan their stay, explore accommodation options and organise transport around the island.

How to Get to the Venice Film Festival on the Lido

The Venice Film Festival takes place on the Venice Lido, which is easily accessible from Venice’s historic centre by public water transport.

The main arrival point is the Santa Maria Elisabetta terminal, connected to Venice and other destinations across the lagoon. From here, visitors can continue towards the Palazzo del Cinema area using local public transport or other transport services available on the island.

Those travelling to Venice by car can use the ferry service to the Lido, checking routes, timetables and availability in advance.

Due to the large number of visitors expected during the festival, it is advisable to plan journeys ahead of time and check for updates on transport connections.

Venice Film Festival 2027: Programme and Tickets

With the official dates already announced, attention now turns to the Venice 84 programme and how to attend the event.

The screening schedule, ticket prices and information about passes for the 2027 edition are not yet available.

Traditionally, the festival also gives members of the public the opportunity to attend numerous screenings by purchasing tickets, according to the arrangements established by the organisers for each cinema and screening.

All information about the programme, accreditations and ticket sales will be published on the official La Biennale di Venezia website.

The 2027 Venice Film Festival is therefore already a date to mark in the calendar: from 1 to 11 September, the Lido will once again become an international stage for the art of cinema.
